Important Message: Afternoon Carpool Pick-up

Please remember that parents and guardians have two primary options for picking up students in the afternoon:

(1) Driving through the carpool line

(2) Parking in the lot or on Arias Street or Montecillo Road (not Trellis Drive) and walking in to pick up your child/carpool

If you need to pick up your child to make a special appointment, please submit a written request to Sue Crowther in the front office, and we can arrange to accompany students to the front "horseshoe" so that you may drive in to pick them up. Please do not instruct students to walk off campus to be picked up in the neighborhood--not even on Montecillo Road near the park above our school's organic garden. We are not able to supervise students there.

Lunch in the Open Lab

Does your child like to make things? Use tools? Invent? Solve real problems? Take things apart to see how they work? The Open Lab is the place to be at lunch! Students in grades 2-8 can bring their lunches to the Lab and tinker any day.

Safe Routes to School

We have been asked to participate in a bi-annual student fall survey to measure the number of children traveling to school by various modes. On the below three dates, we encourage everyone to carpool, bike, or take the bus to school so we can reduce the number of cars through our campus:

Tuesday, September 20

Wednesday, September 21

Thursday, September 22

A Message From the Garden Council

A huge "thank you" to all of the families who signed up for chicken care this summer! Your special attention kept the Mark Day School chicken coop tidy and the chickens well cared for. Bella, the chicken, said the best parts of her summer vacation were exercising in the sun, hanging out with friends, and enjoying a clean coop! Chicken care sign-up forms will be distributed by room parents shortly. Sign up early to get first dibs on fresh eggs for the weekend! Anyone interested in learning about organic gardening or getting more involved in the Mark Day School Garden Council, come to the next meeting in the garden after school on September 14, or email garden@markdayschool.org.

Opening Poem 2016-2017

by Thad Reichley, Head of Lower School

Summer is over, hip-hip-hooray!

No more sleeping until noon, or "PokeMon" Go to play!

It's been almost three months, now it is finally here.

Mark Day School is starting a brand new school year!

But wait... something is different, a building disappeared.

And the sheds, and some trees have also been cleared.

All around campus, are workers in bright vests.

They dig, and they build, and do all kinds of tests.

Trucks come and they go, with supplies and concrete.

And they'll keep coming and going until the job is complete (hopefully next spring).

Yes… construction and change are the theme of the year.

But some things are the same, which is why we're all here.

We have some new faces we must get to know.

They are quite little now, but they're certain to grow.

Why… just look at their buddies who sit by their side.

Who will look after this class with conviction and pride.

This new class will fill in the space left last June.

And they'll have their own K buddies MUCH TOO SOON!

This new Kindergarten class that has so much to learn,

will teach US a some things too, if we give them a turn.

Yes… they are the ones who see magic in the mess.

They have the imaginations we all once possessed.

With curiosity and wonder they will watch the school change.

For them it's exciting and fun... not frustrating and strange.

So, as we sing this class in… and a few parents shed tears.

We'll make a memory to last nine short years.

We'll remember the love... and the date... and the songs.

And most of all that Mark Day is where we ALL belong!
