AFFORDING MARK DAY SCHOOL
We believe that diversity, in its many dimensions, is a prerequisite for excellence. A diverse community enriches the experience of students, families, and faculty and allows us to be a stronger, more vibrant school--we become better thinkers, better collaborators, and better friends.
We know that sustaining diversity depends on an inclusive community and that creating an inclusive environment is our shared responsibility. We are committed to enrolling a socio-economically diverse community of families, and we work individually with families to help make our school an affordable option through Indexed Tuition, which takes into account their ability to pay. Currently, for the 2022-2023 school year, tuition for kindergarten through 8th grade ranges from $250 - $39,252. Tuition does not include fees, which are also indexed. Almost 25 percent of our current families pay tuition below the top of the index.
How to Apply to Pay Below the Top of the Index
To apply to pay tuition below the top of the index, we ask families to register with School and Student Services (SSS) by the National Association of Independent Schools, starting on November 1, 2022 and follow the procedures outlined on the SSS website, including submitting the Parent Financial Statement (PFS) and other required forms. SSS uses the information to evaluate a family's ability to afford tuition. The Mark Day School SSS School Code is 6729.
Notification of Indexed Tuition determinations are emailed and mailed in March along with admission decision letters. Although decisions are made within the same timeline, the two applications and processes are separate.
The general timeline is as follows:
January 13, 2023: deadline to submit SSS application and 2021 tax returns
March 16, 2023: notification of tuition determinations emailed with acceptance letters
April 15, 2023: Deadline to submit 2022 tax returns to Mark Day School
Indexed Tuition Assumptions and Guidelines
-
Every student's tuition is indexed to some degree, as tuition at the top of the index does not cover the total cost of educating a student at Mark Day School. The delta is covered by philanthropy.
-
The school works with families individually and respectfully, maintaining confidential information carefully.
-
Applications must be complete before indexed tuition for the following year is final.
-
Families apply each year and tuition may be adjusted (up or down) depending on a family's demonstrated need.
-
Both parents work when all children are of elementary school age.
-
Financial information is received from all custodial parents/guardians in divorced/separated/never married families.
-
In addition to curricular and co-curricular programs, extended day care (before and after school club), book and activity fees, outdoor education and technology fees are indexed.
-
The Indexed tuition budget is comprised of funds from the annual operating budget as well as income from endowment.
