Eighth graders recently completed their family history projects, "When did my family become American?" Students began work on these over the summer by conducting primary and secondary source research on their families, as well as interviewing the oldest family member accessible to them. Once they returned to school in the fall, students began the hard work of using their research to create a professional-quality documentary telling their families' stories. In addition to their documentaries, students also created movie posters to showcase their work and MLA formatted Works Cited pages to give credit to all sources used in the research and creation of their final products. WHAT'S HAPPENING IN: MUSIC Lower School students are learning the Liberian Folk Song "Funga Alafia" (translation: "You are really welcome, my friend"). We begin the song with a poem and it has become a wonderful way to begin our class time together:
With my thoughts, I welcome you. With my words, I welcome you. With my heart, I welcome you. With my love, I welcome you.
In addition, each class is learning foundational techniques and ideas of music and playing instruments together.
Fourth grade is learning basic chords on ukulele and are learning to sing and play "Riptide" by Vance Joy.
Fifth grade has been preparing an Orff arrangement of the theme song from Tetris for a performance in December. We have started assigning specialty instrument roles and dissecting the melodic content of the song.
Sixth grade has begun working on an Orff ensemble performance of the Bob Marley song "Trench town Rock" for a performance in December. We have started assigning instrumental roles and dissecting the melodic content of the song.
Seventh and 8th graders have the option to sign up for a music elective. This semester, some students are taking The Working Musician, Glee Club, and Electronic Music Production.
