5th Grade Science
Fifth grade students engage in inquiry-based, hands-on learning across a wide range of topics as they learn and practice science skills. They formulate claims about the cause and effect they observe in their experiments and use data to support their claims. They plan and carry out investigations involving the manipulation of an independent variable and the measurement of a dependent variable. They utilize mathematics and computational thinking by observing, estimating, measuring, and graphing data. Students study three major content areas, starting with renewable energy and the design of solar-powered machines. They study living systems and raise trout in the classroom which they release into the local ecosystem. The year concludes with studying electricity and magnetism, in which students construct and test circuits and electromagnets.
