Advancing Mathematical Excellence: New Geometry Pilot Program Empowers 8th Graders
Mark Day School Staff

In November 2024, we began a new Pilot Geometry Program for current 8th graders. The course represents an expansion of our commitment to challenging all students, including in mathematics, and is offered in addition to the final year of the two-year algebra program that all 7th and 8th graders complete.

While research confirms that mastering Algebra 1 provides the essential foundation for higher-level mathematics and STEM fields, some students demonstrate both the capability and drive to tackle geometry concepts simultaneously, preparing them for accelerated mathematical achievement in high school and beyond. Our Geometry Pilot Program is being led by one of our Upper School mathematics teachers, Ms. Carrie Smith, who has experience teaching such a course in a prior school. Ms. Smith says, “This program gives students the opportunity to more deeply engage in a subject they feel highly interested in.”

Students interested in participating in the Geometry Pilot Program must submit a formal application. The course requires a 4-5 hour commitment per week, and is being offered as an independent study course employing a “Flipped Mastery” model. Students engage with asynchronous lessons prepared by Ms. Smith, conduct independent work at their own pace, and then meet in person with Ms. Smith during “office hours.” Students advance in the course only after scoring 80% or higher on in-person chapter assessments. Throughout the semester, students receive personalized feedback on their progress, helping them develop confidence and independence in their mathematical thinking.

The curriculum encompasses critical geometric concepts, including proofs, transformations, similarity, trigonometry, and spatial reasoning – all vital components for future success in advanced mathematics and STEM disciplines. According to Bram, one of 13 students currently enrolled in the program, “My favorite part of being in Geometry is the fact that I get to work at my own pace and at home…the class has definitely helped with my academic work in math because I know more about topics that can often come up in Algebra.”

The launch and implementation of this Geometry Pilot Program, alongside traditional algebra coursework, adds another valuable pathway in our multi-faceted approach to meeting the diverse learning needs of middle school students. For students ready to embrace the challenge, the program offers a unique opportunity to build confidence, independence, and mastery in mathematical thinking that will serve them well in high school and throughout their academic careers.
